Ear Piercing
Dr. Akiva Trattner, Director Ambulatory Dermatology Service, Department of Dermatology, Beilinson Hospital
Parents can have their daughter's ears pierced, but they should be aware of the many potential consequences. The most common cause of infections in the ear is piercing, usually due to allergic reaction to nickel. Allergy to nickel is the most common allergy in the western world in general and in Israel in particular, and its rate is five times higher in women than in men. One of the main reasons we compare women and men is the more common tendency of women to pierce their ears, especially at a young age. If an allergy to nickel becomes apparent in the child after piercing, she will probably be allergic all her life, and this will restrict her from wearing various metallic accessories, such as jewellery, watches, accessories, buttons etc.
Don't say we didn't warn you.
