Let the Sunshine In
Dr. Ron Ezria, Physician, Department of Plastic Surgery and Dr. Dan Ed-Al, Director, Department of Plastic Surgery Rabin Medical Center, Beilinson Campus
Long-term, unchecked overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause malignant melanoma and other skin tumors. It can also lead to premature aging of the skin. Therefore, try to keep out of the sun as much as possible and use protective lotions.
If you haven't taken sufficient protective measures and you have a sunburn, here are some ways to relieve the pain and minimize the damage.
1. Shower in warm water with soap twice a day. It is important to keep the burnt area clean.
2. Place clean wet cloths on the area of the burn.
3. Apply lotions containing aloe vera for a soothing effect. Over-the-counter creams for burns, such as 'Bufin' are good as well.
4. In the first few days after the sunburn, do not use creams with an oil base, which block the pores and increase the risk of skin infections.
5. However, after a few days, moisturizing creams with an oil base are recommended in order to prevent drying of the outer layer of the skin and to strengthen the procedure of recovery.
6. It can take several months for the skin to heal. Avoid further unprotected sun exposure for at least 6 months.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have blistering of more than 2cm in diameter and the area is white and hard with swelling, or temperature, or discharge from the area of the burn, seek your doctor's advice immediately.
