Correct Use of Tampons
Prof. Barry Kaplan, Deputy Director, Comprehensive Women's Health Center
Tampons are a popular means of absorbing blood flow during menstruation, especially for women who spend much time away of home. Their improper use, however, can pose a serious health hazard, leading, for example, to infection. Here are several tips on how to use tampons correctly.
Menstrual blood provides a natural culture medium for bacteria. Leaving the tampon in the vagina for a long time creates a hot and humid environment ideal for the development of infection. Therefore, as a preventive measure, or to keep existing infections from worsening, tampons should be removed at regular intervals and the area cleaned at each new insertion.
Perfumed tampons are not recommended, because inserting chemical substances into the vagina can cause a generalized or local allergic reaction and thereby endanger one's health. Deodorants used in this area may have the same effect, and they are generally discouraged as well.
