Echocardiograph System for the Operating Rooms

    Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rabin Medical Center is the largest and most advanced facility of its kind in Israel. The professional capabilities, high technological level and full commitment to saving lives places it at the forefront of cardiothoracic medicine in Israel.

Serving as a national referr "The Institute for Cardiovascular Research and Robotics Technology" at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. Its team of outstanding surgeons are all eminent experts in their field, many having undergone specialized training at some of the most outstanding medical centers in the United States and Europe.

Affiliated to the Sackler School of Medicine - Tel Aviv University, the Department is very active in all facets of student teaching. Furthermore, its staff is very involved in many important research projects.

International Standard of Service and Care

Almost 1400 adult heart and thoracic operations are performed every year, numbers that compare very favorably with the foremost heart centers in the USA. The Department offers international standards of service and care with advanced hospitalization facilities for complete expert postoperative medical and nursing care, and state-of-the art Intensive Care for around the clock monitoring and supervision of critically ill patients.

The highly experienced staff performs all of the common operations on the heart, lungs, chest and major blood vessels, many of them complex and newer procedures. These include:

    • Coronary artery bypass
    • Complex valve repair and replacement
    • Complex aortic aneurysm repair
    • Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass
    • Congenital heart malformation surgery
    • Thoracic surgery including lung reduction and other complex surgical procedures
    • Heart, lung and heart-lung transplantation
    • Artificial heart transplantation

The department is comprised of specialized units, including:

    • Aortic Surgery Unit - the most experienced in the region for complex aortic operations.
    • Transplant and Heart Failure Unit - comprising multiple resources to surgically treat all types of congestive heart failure, perform heart, lung and combined heart-lung transplantations with more than an 80% overall survival rate. They carry out the largest number of lung transplants in Israel and in the region.
    • Thoracic Surgery Unit - performs close to 400 thoracic procedures annually.
    • Satellite Unit - Kaplan Medical Center - performs over 200 open heart operations annually.

Echocardiograph System for the Operating Rooms

Thousands of surgical procedures are performed at Rabin Medical Center every year, both elective and emergency surgery. We have the largest Cardiothoracic Surgery Department in the country, we perform a majority of the organ transplantations in Israel, and with a Level 1 Trauma Center and our heliport, Rabin Medical Center gives emergency surgical care to trauma victims, both civilians and soldiers.

It is thus vital that our surgery suites be equipped with up-to-date equipment that enables our dedicated staff to optimize performance. During surgery, especially complex surgical procedures, every second counts and it is imperative that we offer the best conditions to both patients and the surgical team.

The Echocardiography Laboratory at our Department of Cardiology is one of the largest clinical, educational and research facilities in Israel for echocardiographic services. Over 15,000 comprehensive patient examinations are performed annually within RMC's facilities, by means of trans-thoracic, trans-esophageal echocardiography and stress echo studies.

Echocardiography uses ultrasound waves to create images of the heart at work and at rest. These sound waves are sent into the chest and rebound from the heart's walls and valves, creating an image called an echocardiogram. This picture shows the size and shape of the heart and movement of its valves. Echocardiography is currently the most important non-invasive diagnostic tool in cardiovascular diseases and cardiac-related emergencies, enabling non-invasive assessment of anatomy, function, hemodynamics and blood flow.

The advantages of this important diagnostic equipment are manifold: It is non-invasive and performed without the use of radioactive materials. New, modern-age echocardiograph systems offer highly enhanced imaging of the heart, with much more accurate anatomical and functional imaging. It is portable and can be used during surgery in the operating rooms, where it is used to examine the patient's heart during hemodynamic decline or shock. It is a vital pre-surgery tool for cardiothoracic surgeons who will receive exact anatomic details before surgery, enabling more precise surgery programs. Furthermore, the advanced properties of new-generation echocardiography systems enable seeing inside the heart in greater detail and more clearly, all in a shortened examination time.

There is a constantly growing need for this vital examination, basic today in the field of cardiology, and the current equipment in the hospital is not sufficient to meet present and future needs. It is vital that we acquire an echocardiograph specifically for the operating rooms, where it will be available 24 hours a day for emergency evaluation of a patient's heart.

The high-quality imaging and other advanced characteristics of the Echocardiography System will enable more accurate diagnosis and life-saving care for patients in need of this vital examination during surgery. Purchase of a new Philips Echo-Cardiography System for the Operating Rooms, will enable us to serve the emergency needs for evaluation of heart anatomy and function during surgery.

Cost of the Echocardiography System: $70,000
