 First Annual Israel Bike-a-thon for Heart Disease

It was a star-studded bike team that led American Friends of Rabin Medical Center's (AFRMC) first bike-a-thon, a three-day 250-mile trek from Rabin Medical Center’s Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva to Eilat. Members included Israeli Olympic Gold Medallist in windsurfing, Gal Friedman, Israeli Olympic swimmer Eitan Urbach, the sports trainer for the Israeli national soccer team, Dr. Avi Moyal, Lieutenant General of Israel Defense Forces and national trainer for Israel’s soccer team.

Some of the other participants were: Dr. Dan Oppenheim, CEO of Rabin Medical Center (RMC), who joined the group for the first leg of the journey; Jackie Elias, an active member of AFRMC, who helped organize the bike-a-thon and participated in memory of her father who died from heart disease. AFRMC board member, Stephen Flatow and his wife, Rosalyn, took part in the bike-a-thon to mark the 10th year yarzheit of their daughter Alisa Flatow who was killed on a suicide bus bombing – Rabin Medical Center’s cardiac transplantation recovery unit is named for her.

The money raised through the bike-a-thon raised will be directed to Rabin Medical Center's Cardiothoracic Surgery Department currently led by the renowned Dr. Bernardo Vidne. This past month its doctors introduced a revolutionary heart procedure using VEGF or Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor. VEGF is a gene-based therapy, which when injected into a patient's heart encourages the growth of new blood cells and naturally enhances blood flow to the heart.
