Establishment of the New Comprehensive Orthopedic Ambulatory Services
The Vision
Establishment of new Comprehensive Orthopedic Ambulatory Services which will offer the most advanced and well-coordinated outpatient orthopedic care for a variety of conditions and serve the patients in aesthetic, well-planned facilities.
Facilities
The new Comprehensive Orthopedic Ambulatory Services will measure approximately 450 sq. meters, significantly expanding the facilities and doubling the number of rooms, and are being planned in accordance with present standards and needs, in terms of both design and size of rooms. Plans take into consideration the specific needs of subspecialty clinics and the constantly increasing patient load.
Facilities will be divided into a number of separate areas for specific subspecialties, each with examination rooms and waiting and admission areas. In addition, one of the areas will contain a treatment room and a plaster room for placement and removal of casts. There will be an occupational therapy hall and a special waiting area for beds and stretchers. The facilities will include secretarial offices, a staff room and storage areas.
The Services are being designed according to modern hospital design concepts that emphasize patient comfort and harmonious surroundings.
Equipment
The Orthopedic Ambulatory Services will be equipped with all the necessary accessories, including office furniture, examination beds, comfortable chairs and more. In addition, they will include advanced computer systems and special screens for reading and deciphering of various imaging modules. The system will be part of the wide-ranging Picture Archive and Communication System (PACS), a multisite, multidomain image management system with the ability to view image data from medical tests performed at clinics and hospitals throughout the country.

Waiting Room: Orthopedic Ambulatory Services
The number of patients seen in the Orthopedic Ambulatory Services has increased during the last 5 years from 12,000 to over 20,000 in 2007. This includes 5,000 soldiers treated at the Soldiers Clinic, which gives special attention to their unique needs. This number is expected to double following the merger of Beilinson and HaSharon hospitals at Rabin Medical Center.
Built in 1966, the Ambulatory Services were planned according to the standards and needs of the times. The facilities are much too small to meet present needs, with inadequate space to offer efficient service to the constantly growing number of patients. An average of over 80 patients visit this area every day. At present the Orthopedic Ambulatory Services are housed in old and overcrowded facilities, with patients waiting in long, inhospitable corridors. There are far from enough examination rooms, and even during examination it is difficult to offer patients adequate privacy as patients waiting for appointments have to walk through these rooms to reach other areas of the Orthopedic Ambulatory Services.
The waiting area is extremely cramped and cannot meet present needs in even a minimal fashion. There are an inadequate number of seats, causing many patients to have to stand while waiting. This is especially difficult for patients suffering from orthopedic ailments. There is no space whatsoever for patients in wheelchairs. All of this causes discomfort and anxiety, and affects the efficiency of the service.
It is vital to enlarge and reconstruct the waiting lounge and reception area of the Orthopedic Ambulatory Services. Expansion and updating of this facility will enable Rabin Medical Center to properly serve patients in aesthetic, well-planned facilities.The Orthopedic Ambulatory Services are located on the ground floor of the Ambulatory Services Building. The new proposed expanded Waiting Lounge and Reception Area of the Orthopedic Ambulatory Services will be constructed in an area which is currently part of an open patio, adjacent to the existing waiting corridor. It is necessary to construct new infrastructure, including walls, roof, and flooring, to accommodate this area to present needs.
This new Waiting Lounge will measure approximately 60 square meters, and will include about 50 seats grouped in a patient-friendly arrangement, and a Reception Desk. The Lounge will overlook a garden patio and is being planned according to modern hospital design concepts that emphasize patient comfort and harmonious surroundings. The expansion and refurbishing of the Orthopedic Ambulatory Services Waiting Lounge will enable Rabin Medical Center to offer the people of Israel and IDF soldiers enhanced outpatient orthopedic care and maximum comfort.

Hexapod System for Orthopedic Surgery
The Hexapod System is used as an addition to the Ilizarov Apparatus orthopedic tool and is considered to be the latest technology in this field. It is a bone fixation device that combines a rigid hexapod fixation system that with the support of a web-based software program allows for the precise correction of the most complicated deformations of bone extremities, including congenital clubfoot, and also accurate closed reduction of fractures of long bones during surgery.
The Hexapod System allows the surgeon six degrees of freedom for bone fragment displacement by controlling the distracters. While using this assembly, there is the possibility for universal three-dimensional bone corrections or reductions without the need for complicated joint mechanisms. It offers the orthopedic surgeon the possibility for simultaneous corrections of multidirectional bone deformities while the computer-assisted control is the key for continuous painless reduction.
The Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at Rabin Medical Center requires the Hexapod System, as it is an essential component for more precise and accurate orthopedic surgical interventions, many which are orthopedic trauma cases.

Fellowship in Orthopedic Trauma
The Department of Orthopedics Surgery is an essential and major component of Rabin Medical Center's National Level One Trauma Unit. As such, it is crucial that our physicians receive as much advanced training and experience as possible in the field of Orthopedic Trauma in order to be fully prepared for all emergency situations, particularly in a country such as Israel.
It has been show that participants of these intense short-term fellowships are subject to opportunities that dramatically increase their level of understanding and skills when dealing with Orthopedic Trauma and expose them to new modalities and standards for treating orthopedic trauma patients.
The Fellow
The participant of the fellowship will be a senior resident from the Department of Orthopedics as approved by the head of the department. The physician will have the opportunity to receive specialized training out of the country in orthopedic trauma.
The Program
The fellowship will be for a period of 6-8 weeks and will take place at one of several major international recognized trauma centers. The participant will have abundant access to all areas relating to orthopedic trauma and will be able to significantly increase his/her knowledge in the treatment of orthopedic trauma patients.
While working with established orthopedic trauma experts the fellow will gain expertise in advanced surgical procedures such as internal fixation, circular external fixation and closed intra-medullary nailing techniques. There will be ample exposure to acute trauma including multiply injured patients, reconstructive trauma including nonunions, malunions, and pelvic and acetabular trauma as well as multiple trauma management. The fellow will be supervised by the program director and full-time attending physicians.
