    New Hybrid Operating Room

    Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rabin Medical Center is the largest and most advanced facility of its kind in Israel. The professional capabilities, high technological level and full commitment to saving lives places it at the forefront of cardiothoracic medicine in Israel.

Serving as a national referr "The Institute for Cardiovascular Research and Robotics Technology" at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. Its team of outstanding surgeons are all eminent experts in their field, many having undergone specialized training at some of the most outstanding medical centers in the United States and Europe.

Affiliated to the Sackler School of Medicine - Tel Aviv University, the Department is very active in all facets of student teaching. Furthermore, its staff is very involved in many important research projects.

International Standard of Service and Care

Almost 1400 adult heart and thoracic operations are performed every year, numbers that compare very favorably with the foremost heart centers in the USA. The Department offers international standards of service and care with advanced hospitalization facilities for complete expert postoperative medical and nursing care, and state-of-the art Intensive Care for around the clock monitoring and supervision of critically ill patients.

The highly experienced staff performs all of the common operations on the heart, lungs, chest and major blood vessels, many of them complex and newer procedures. These include:

    • Coronary artery bypass
    • Complex valve repair and replacement
    • Complex aortic aneurysm repair
    • Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass
    • Congenital heart malformation surgery
    • Thoracic surgery including lung reduction and other complex surgical procedures
    • Heart, lung and heart-lung transplantation
    • Artificial heart transplantation

The department is comprised of specialized units, including:

    • Aortic Surgery Unit - the most experienced in the region for complex aortic operations.
    • Transplant and Heart Failure Unit - comprising multiple resources to surgically treat all types of congestive heart failure, perform heart, lung and combined heart-lung transplantations with more than an 80% overall survival rate. They carry out the largest number of lung transplants in Israel and in the region.
    • Thoracic Surgery Unit - performs close to 400 thoracic procedures annually.
    • Satellite Unit - Kaplan Medical Center - performs over 200 open heart operations annually.

New Hybrid Operating Room for Cardiothoracic Surgery

Aims to provide the best, safest medical care

The best treatment for many cardiovascular patients often involves a combination of both surgical and interventional procedures involving catheters, to get inside blood vessels for diagnostic tests or to repair damaged vessels or other heart structures. Integration of interventional techniques into cardiovascular surgery requires combining a full range of interventional, imaging and surgical services in one place - without the need to transfer patients or to assemble surgical support, leading to better patient care.

    Integrated technology enabling integrated care

We plan to establish a new Hybrid Operating Room combining minimally invasive and interventional surgical technologies with medical imaging and communications in one venue. It will allow our surgeons and physicians to perform advanced hybrid therapies - combinations of catheter-based, conventional, and less invasive surgical procedures - and streamline care for patients who need multiple procedures as part of their treatment.

The hybrid operating room will become an integral part of our Cardiothoracic Surgery Department's surgery facilities, enabling use of new cardiac surgery therapies and playing a vital role for minimally invasive surgery.

The highlight of each large room will be a custom-designed imaging system on a robotic arm that integrates intravascular ultrasound, dynamic CT imaging, angiography, and other imaging technologies. Cardiac imaging will provide real-time detailed pictures of the heart and blood vessels to help specialists diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. The new hybrid operating room is being designed to optimize the operating capability without compromising lighting or any maneuverability or flexibility. The functional space will allow different disciplines to work together to reach maximum outcome.

With this introduction, Rabin Medical Center will remain at the forefront of medical advancements, pairing the latest technology with superior clinical expertise.

    Mixing expertise and technology

The new Hybrid Operating Room will create the optimal setting for cardiologists and surgeons to work synergistically, while directly benefiting patient care. It will allow surgeons and cardiologists to transition seamlessly from invasive to open surgical procedures (when necessary), thereby minimizing the risk to patients and reducing the overall time in the hospital. Use of advanced hybrid therapies within the hybrid Operating Room will enable our clinicians to use their talents and expertise to provide the safest, most effective and least invasive care.

    Leading-edge technology delivering leading-edge results

The Hybrid Operating Room will allow certain patients to have a same-day, one-stop process, such as performing a hybrid stent procedure and valve surgery. The new hybrid operating rooms will also provide patients with access to new technologies and procedures that couldn't be implemented without this type of setup, such as valve interventions without open heart surgery or cardiovascular bypass.

The Hybrid Operating Room will be utilized for a variety of cardiac and vascular procedures including:

    • Minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures
    • Percutaneous (catheter-based) heart valve replacement and repair
    • Percutaneous (catheter-based) vascular procedures
    • Combined open and endovascular procedures
    • Treatment of cardiac arrhythmias
    • Abdominal-aortic-aneurysm repairs
    • Peripheral angioplasties

For patients, the new Hybrid Operating Room will result in:

    • More minimally invasive procedures
    • Fewer surgical complications
    • Shorter hospital stays
    • Faster recovery time
    • Improved patient outcomes
    • Treatment for patients who otherwise would not have an option

Establishment of the new Hybrid Operating Room for Cardiothoracic Surgery will enable us to create the most technologically advanced operating environment for physicians to provide the most up-to-date cardiovascular care, enhancing our abilities to save lives and enhance quality of life.

A donation of $1,500,000 will enable us to purchase the necessary equipment and prepare the infrastructure for establishment of the new Hybrid Operating Room. We will be most appreciative for your support which will help us in our efforts to save lives!
