    Portable Echocardiography System

    Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rabin Medical Center is the largest and most advanced facility of its kind in Israel. The professional capabilities, high technological level and full commitment to saving lives places it at the forefront of cardiothoracic medicine in Israel.

Serving as a national referr "The Institute for Cardiovascular Research and Robotics Technology" at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. Its team of outstanding surgeons are all eminent experts in their field, many having undergone specialized training at some of the most outstanding medical centers in the United States and Europe.

Affiliated to the Sackler School of Medicine - Tel Aviv University, the Department is very active in all facets of student teaching. Furthermore, its staff is very involved in many important research projects.

International Standard of Service and Care

Almost 1400 adult heart and thoracic operations are performed every year, numbers that compare very favorably with the foremost heart centers in the USA. The Department offers international standards of service and care with advanced hospitalization facilities for complete expert postoperative medical and nursing care, and state-of-the art Intensive Care for around the clock monitoring and supervision of critically ill patients.

The highly experienced staff performs all of the common operations on the heart, lungs, chest and major blood vessels, many of them complex and newer procedures. These include:

    • Coronary artery bypass
    • Complex valve repair and replacement
    • Complex aortic aneurysm repair
    • Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass
    • Congenital heart malformation surgery
    • Thoracic surgery including lung reduction and other complex surgical procedures
    • Heart, lung and heart-lung transplantation
    • Artificial heart transplantation

The department is comprised of specialized units, including:

    • Aortic Surgery Unit - the most experienced in the region for complex aortic operations.
    • Transplant and Heart Failure Unit - comprising multiple resources to surgically treat all types of congestive heart failure, perform heart, lung and combined heart-lung transplantations with more than an 80% overall survival rate. They carry out the largest number of lung transplants in Israel and in the region.
    • Thoracic Surgery Unit - performs close to 400 thoracic procedures annually.
    • Satellite Unit - Kaplan Medical Center - performs over 200 open heart operations annually.

Intensive Cardiac Care Unit: Portable Echocardiography System

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rabin Medical Center (RMC) is the largest facility for heart surgery in Israel performing about 1500 open-heart procedures annually, which is over 20% of the heart operations in the country. The highly experienced staff performs all of the common operations on the heart, lungs, chest and major blood vessels, such as coronary bypass, heart valve replacement and aortic aneurysm surgery, as well as more complex and newer procedures such as heart, lung and heart-lung transplantation, thoracic surgery, mitral valve repair, and more.

Following cardiothoracic surgery, all patients are hospitalized in the Department's 12-bed Intensive Care Unit for close surveillance and quick medical life-saving intervention. Length of this close post-operative surveillance is dependent on the type of surgical intervention, patient's initial condition, and complications that may have developed.

During hospitalization in the ICU patients must undergo various examinations, often performed as emergency procedures due to sudden change in their medical condition. These tests must be performed while they are in their hospital bed as they are hooked-up to various monitoring and life-supporting machines. The necessary equipment must be available at all times, as time is of an essence.

Echocardiography uses ultrasound waves to create images of the heart. The images created show the size and shape of the heart and movement of its valves. Echocardiography is currently the most important non-invasive diagnostic tool in cardiovascular diseases and cardiac-related emergencies, enabling non-invasive assessment of anatomy, function, hemodynamics and blood flow.

The advantages of this important diagnostic equipment are manifold: It is non-invasive and performed without the use of radioactive materials. It is portable, used by the patient's bed while in intensive care to examine his heart during hemodynamic decline or shock. Furthermore, the advanced properties of new-generation echocardiography systems enable seeing inside the heart in greater detail and more clearly, all in a shortened examination time.

Echocardiography is the most fundamental non-invasive tool in coronary medicine today. It is vital that we purchase a new VIVID I Portable Echocardiograph System, manufactured by GE, for the ICU of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Constant availability of this vital piece of equipment will help us in our fight to save lives.

Cost of the Portable Echocardiography System: $30,000
Purchase of Portable Echocardiograph System: $90,000
