The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rabin Medical Center is the best in Israel. With over 1000 adult open heart operations, 400 general thoracic operations and 400 pediatric cardiac operations, the department's team is in charge of nearly 30% of Israel's cardiothoracic procedures. An additional 200 open heart operations are performed annually at its satellite unit at the Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot. The department performs a large a variety of cardiac and thoracic procedures, including coronary artery bypass grafting, minimally invasive valve repairs, heart and lung transplantation and artificial heart implantation. Half of Israel's heart transplants and virtually all of the country's lung transplants are performed at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rabin Medical Center. The center is also leads Israel in Israel complex aortic surgery, performing close to 100 thoracic aortic aneurysm surgeries annually.
Since 2006, Dr. Eyal Porat has been the Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rabin Medical Center and has led the Division of Aortic Surgery. Dr. Porat is also an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center & Medical School in Houston, Texas. Before coming to the Rabin Medical Center, Dr. Porat served as Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Director of the Robotics Program, which he established. He also founded "The Memorial Hermann Institute for Cardiovascular Research and Robotics Technology" where he served as Medical Director.
Dr. Porat continues his academic teaching and research within the Tel Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine. His research and clinical interests include aortic surgery, robotic surgery as well as minimally invasive and beating heart coronary artery surgery. He is a member of many professional organizations and medical societies and serves on the editorial boards of prestigious professional journals.
Since his arrival at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Rabin Medical Center, the Department took the lead in Israel in performing complex aortic operations with full cooperation with the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University of Texas.
Division of Thoracic Surgery:
The division of thoracic surgery at Rabin Medical Center, headed by Dr. Milton Saute M.D., established RMC as the leading center in Israel for both open and thoracoscopic thoracic procedures. This division performs virtually all of the lung transplants in Israel. It performs approximately 400 thoracic procedures annually. Surgical procedures include lung volume reduction, extensive tumor resection, and others. In collaboration with the division for transplantation and surgical treatment of heart failure, this division has performed over 300 lung transplants in the last 9 years.
Division of Surgical Treatment for Heart Failure and Transplantation:
Headed by Dr. Benjamin Medallion, the Division of Transplantation and Surgical Treatment of Heart Failure performs all aspects of transplantation and artificial circulatory support. The department is the national leader for extra corporeal circulatory support for both adults and children, who are referred from hospitals throughout Israel. During the H1N1 outbreak, the department's team treated several patients with advanced circulatory support systems. Nearly all lung transplantations and about half of Israel's heart transplantations take place at Rabin Medical Center. 136 heart transplantations and over 300 lung transplantations have been performed, with an over 80% overall survival rate beyond one year.
Division of Aortic Surgery:
Since the department's chairman, Dr. Eyal E. Porat, took the reins of this division, it has taken the lead in performing complex aortic surgical procedures in Israel. Performing close to 100 complex aortic procedures including thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair, this division serves as a national referral center.
Division of Minimally-Invasive Surgery:
Headed by Dr. Ram Sharony M.D., this division is responsible for performing heart valve replacements and complex valve repairs through small incisions instead of performing a sternotomy incision. With excellent results, patients from all over the country are referred for minimally invasive heart-valve operations.
Division for Cardiac Research at the Felsenstein Medical Research Center:
This division is an integral part of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and is headed by professor. Edith Hochhauser, Ph.D. Students for bachelor's, master's and Ph.D degrees take an active role in research at the laboratory. Residents in different medical professions conduct a mandatory basic research program in this laboratory and are guided by Prof. Hochhauser.
