Hip Resurfacing, a form of Hip Arthroplasty, that has emerged in recent years as an alternative to total hip replacement.

As one of the leading departments of orthopedic surgery in Israel, the Orthopedic Department at Rabin Medical Center treats patients of all ages including many young soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces. They use the most advanced medical techniques for the benefit of all their patients.

One such technique is Hip Resurfacing, a form of Hip Arthroplasty, that has emerged in recent years as an alternative to total hip replacement (THR), particularly in younger patients. This procedure is performed in a very limited number of medical centers in Israel, with Rabin Medical Center performing the overwhelming majority of these procedures. Dr. Steven Velkes, Deputy Director of the Department of Orthopedics and Head of the Joint Surgery Unit, is a pioneer in this technique in Israel and began performing this surgical procedure when it was in the very early stages of development.

Hip replacement as well as Hip Resurfacing is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant, and is generally performed to relieve the pain of arthritis or to repair severe physical joint damage. Total hip replacements may be associated with complications, difficult post-operative recovery and a limited range of joint motion following surgery. Hip resurfacing is a much less invasive procedure and allows younger, active people to return to the activities they enjoyed prior to their hip problems. Today there are many young people with hip arthritis caused by degenerative joint disease that require an artificial hip joint, and Hip Resurfacing is fast becoming the preferred alternative to Total Hip Replacement.
